About the Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act

The Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act would help create safer schools AND interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline. The Act would also help fund thousands of new counselors, school psychologists, social workers, nurses, and other professionals for the thousands of schools in the country right now that don't have access to these care providers. The fact is, the safest schools in the country today are not the most policed ones, they're the ones with the most resources to help kids thrive. And yet, our response to school shootings and gun violence in schools has too often relied on ineffective interventions that just result in more trauma, or worse, punishing kids who need help and support. That harm disproportionately impacts Black students and other students of color. That isn't reducing or preventing violence, it's just shifting who perpetrates it, and where it happens. It’s a broken strategy that makes our kids more unsafe.

In fact, studies show that the presence of police officers in schools does not measurably increase school safety nor does it improve academic outcomes. From Parkland to Uvalde, school resource officers have also failed to deter—let alone stop—school shootings, too. This legislation will provide schools across the country the resources they need to hire the staff, and build the support systems, to create safe learning environments and give kids the tools they need for learning and self-growth, rather than simply turning to punishments that escalate.

The time to invest in care, and not criminalization is important now more than ever.
